In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened unsalted butter with an electric mixer on medium speed until creamy and smooth, about 2-3 minutes.
Gradually add the powdered sugar, one cup at a time, mixing on low speed until combined. Scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed.
Once the sugar is fully incorporated, add the heavy cream, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt. Beat on medium speed for another 3-4 minutes until the frosting becomes light and fluffy.
If the frosting is too thick, add a little more cream, one tablespoon at a time, until the desired consistency is reached. If it’s too thin, add more powdered sugar gradually.
Use immediately to frost your favorite baked goods, or store in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to one week.
For colored frosting, you can add food coloring a few drops at a time until you reach your desired shade.
Make sure your butter is at room temperature for easier blending.
This frosting can be piped into decorative shapes if using a piping bag.
