Equipment

  • 1 9x13 inch baking dish
  • 1 mixing bowl
  • 1 whisk
  • 1 spatula
  • 1 set measuring cups and spoons

Ingredients

  • 1 cup maple syrup
  • 1 loaf (16 oz) bread (preferably brioche or challah), cut into cubes
  • 8 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk For a richer flavor, substitute half with heavy cream.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted
  • powdered sugar (for dusting, optional)
  • fresh berries (for serving, optional)

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Pour the maple syrup into the bottom of a 9x13 inch baking dish, spreading it evenly.
  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, vanilla extract, cinnamon, salt, and granulated sugar until well combined.
  • Add the cubed bread to the egg mixture, stirring until all pieces are soaked. Let it sit for about 5 minutes to ensure the bread absorbs the mixture.
  • Pour the bread mixture over the syrup in the baking dish, spreading it evenly. Drizzle the melted butter over the top.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes, or until the casserole is puffed and lightly golden.
  • Remove from the oven and allow it to cool for 5 minutes. Then, carefully invert the casserole onto a serving platter to reveal the syrupy side on top.
  • Dust with powdered sugar if desired and serve warm with fresh berries.

Notes

For a richer flavor, substitute half of the whole milk with heavy cream.
You can prepare this casserole the night before. Just cover it and refrigerate after assembling; allow it to sit at room temperature for 30 minutes before baking.
Feel free to customize by adding chocolate chips, nuts, or your favorite fruits into the bread mixture before baking.
