Equipment

  • 1 large skillet
  • 1 wooden spoon
  • 1 set measuring cups and spoons
  • 1 can opener
  • 1 grill or pan for toasting buns
  • 1 set serving plates

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 1 bell pepper, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 1/2 cup yellow mustard
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 6 pieces hamburger buns
  • Pickles or shredded cheese for topping Optional

Instructions

  • In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef. Cook until browned, breaking it up with a wooden spoon as it cooks. Drain any excess fat.
  • Add the diced onion and bell pepper to the skillet. Sauté for about 5 minutes, until the vegetables are softened.
  • Stir in the garlic and cook for an additional minute until fragrant.
  • In a bowl, mix together the ketchup, mustard, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, salt, black pepper, and paprika. Pour this sauce over the meat mixture in the skillet.
  • Reduce heat to low and simmer for 10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.
  • While the sloppy joe mixture is simmering, toast the hamburger buns on a grill or in a pan until golden.
  • To serve, spoon the sloppy joe mixture onto the bottom half of each bun. Top with pickles or cheese if desired. Place the top half of the bun on and serve hot.
