Ingredients
  

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 28 ounces crushed tomatoes, canned
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions
 

  • Heat the olive oil in a large saucepan over medium heat.
  • Add the diced onion and sauté until it becomes translucent, about 5 minutes.
  • Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
  • Pour in the crushed tomatoes and add the tomato paste, stirring everything together.
  • Sprinkle in the sugar, oregano, basil, salt, and black pepper.
  • Increase the heat to medium-high and bring the sauce to a simmer.
  • Once simmering, reduce the heat to low and let the sauce cook uncovered for about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until slightly thickened.
  • Taste and adjust the seasoning if necessary.
  • Serve the sauce hot over your choice of pasta and garnish with fresh basil, if desired.

Notes

This sauce can be made ahead and stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or frozen for up to 3 months.
For added flavor, consider incorporating red pepper flakes for a little heat or cooking with ground meat for a meat sauce variation.
