Equipment

  • 1 large pot
  • 1 skillet
  • 1 wooden spoon
  • 1 measuring cups
  • 1 measuring spoons
  • 1 colander

Ingredients

  • 12 oz pasta (penne or spaghetti)
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (14 oz) crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • to taste salt
  • to taste pepper
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • grated Parmesan cheese (for serving)

Instructions

  • In a large pot, bring salted water to a boil. Add the pasta and cook according to the package directions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  • In a skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 3-4 minutes.
  • Add the minced garlic to the skillet and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes, being careful not to burn the garlic.
  • Increase the heat to medium-high and add the ground beef to the skillet. Cook until browned, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon, about 6-8 minutes.
  • Drain excess fat if necessary. Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Bring the mixture to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low. Let it simmer for 10-15 minutes to allow flavors to meld.
  • Toss the cooked pasta with the meat sauce until evenly coated.
  • Serve hot, topped with grated Parmesan cheese.
  • For added spice, consider incorporating red pepper flakes into the sauce.
  • This dish can be easily doubled for larger gatherings, and leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat on the stovetop or in the microwave.
