- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 4 cups powdered sugar
- 1/4 cup heavy cream or milk Add more if the frosting is too thick.
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- a pinch salt
In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter using an electric mixer on medium speed until creamy, about 2-3 minutes.
Gradually add the powdered sugar, mixing on low speed until combined. Scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed.
Once the sugar is incorporated, add the heavy cream (or milk), vanilla extract, and salt. Beat on high speed for about 2-3 minutes until the frosting is light and fluffy.
If the frosting is too thick, add a little more cream or milk, one tablespoon at a time, until you reach your desired consistency. If it’s too thin, add a little more powdered sugar.
Use immediately to frost your favorite baked goods, or transfer the frosting to a piping bag for decorative designs.
You can tint the frosting with food coloring to match any occasion.
Store any leftover frosting in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week. Let it come to room temperature before reusing.
For variations, consider adding cocoa powder for chocolate frosting or experimenting with different extracts like almond or lemon.
