Equipment

  • 1 mixing bowl
  • 1 whisk or electric mixer
  • 1 piping bags or plastic sandwich bags optional
  • 1 cookie spatula or flat surface for drying

Ingredients

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • optional food coloring For colored icing.

Instructions

  • In a mixing bowl, combine the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract.
  • Whisk the mixture until it is smooth and the sugar is fully dissolved. If the icing is too thick, add a tiny bit more milk until you reach the desired consistency.
  • If you want colored icing, divide the icing into separate bowls and add a few drops of food coloring to each. Stir until the color is evenly distributed.
  • If you prefer a thicker icing for decorating, keep it as is. For a runnier icing that’s great for flooding cookies, mix in a bit more milk to achieve the right consistency.
  • Once your icing is ready, transfer it to piping bags for precise decorating, or simply use a spoon to drizzle over the cookies.
  • Allow the icing to set by letting the cookies sit at room temperature for about 30 minutes to an hour until hard.

Notes

Store any leftover icing in an airtight container for up to a week in the refrigerator. Before using, let it come to room temperature and re-mix.
You can also experiment with different flavors by substituting the vanilla extract with almond or lemon extract.
For added texture, consider sprinkling edible glitter or colored sprinkles on the icing before it sets.
