Equipment

  • 1 mixing bowl
  • 1 whisk
  • 1 shallow dish
  • 1 frying pan or deep fryer
  • 1 slotted spatula
  • 1 paper towels
  • 1 knife and cutting board

Ingredients

  • 4 slices thick bread (preferably brioche or challah)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs (preferably panko for extra crunch)
  • 2 cups vegetable oil (for frying)
  • powdered sugar (for dusting)
  • maple syrup (for serving)

Instructions

  • In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt until well combined.
  • Preheat the oil in a frying pan over medium heat or in a deep fryer to 350°F (175°C).
  • Dip each slice of bread into the egg mixture, making sure to coat both sides well. Allow any excess mixture to drip off.
  • Dredge each egg-coated slice of bread in the flour, covering both sides, and then dip it again in the egg mixture. Finally, coat it in the breadcrumbs, pressing gently to adhere.
  • Carefully place the coated slices in the hot oil, frying in batches if necessary to avoid overcrowding.
  • Fry for 2-3 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crispy. Use a slotted spatula to flip them and remove them from the oil.
  • Once cooked, place fried French toast on paper towels to absorb excess oil.
  • Dust with powdered sugar and serve warm with maple syrup on the side.

Notes

You can add your favorite toppings such as fresh berries, whipped cream, or chocolate sauce for extra flavor.
Make sure the oil is hot enough to prevent the French toast from becoming soggy.
For a healthier option, consider using whole grain bread and reducing the amount of oil used by pan-frying instead of deep frying.
