Equipment

  • 1 electric mixer or whisk
  • 1 mixing bowl
  • 1 rubber spatula
  • 1 set measuring cups and spoons
  • 1 piping bag (optional for decoration)
  • 1 cupcake spatula

Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream or milk Add more if frosting is too thick.
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • a pinch of salt

Instructions

  • In a mixing bowl, beat the softened butter with an electric mixer on medium speed until creamy, about 2-3 minutes.
  • Gradually add the powdered sugar, about one cup at a time, mixing on low speed until combined to avoid a sugar cloud.
  • Add the heavy cream, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt. Increase speed to medium-high and beat for 2-3 minutes until the frosting is fluffy and smooth.
  • If the frosting is too thick, add a little more cream until the desired consistency is achieved. If too thin, add more powdered sugar.
  • Use a rubber spatula to scrape down the sides of the bowl, ensuring everything is well mixed.
  • Transfer the frosting into a piping bag or use a spatula to frost your cooled cupcakes.

Notes

This frosting can be tinted with food coloring to match themes for special occasions.
Store any leftover frosting in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week. Make sure to re-whip before using.
For flavor variations, consider adding cocoa powder for chocolate frosting or citrus zest for a refreshing twist.
