Equipment

  • 1 medium mixing bowl
  • 1 electric mixer or whisk
  • 1 spatula
  • 1 measuring cups
  • 1 measuring spoons

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened 1 stick, at room temperature for easy mixing.
  • 2/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder Sift to avoid lumps.
  • 3 cups powdered sugar Add gradually.
  • 1/3 cup milk Add more if the frosting is too thick, one tablespoon at a time.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Mix until fully blended.

Instructions

  • In a medium mixing bowl, beat the softened butter with an electric mixer or whisk until creamy and smooth, about 1-2 minutes.
  • Sift in the cocoa powder to avoid lumps and mix until fully incorporated with the butter.
  • Gradually add the powdered sugar, alternating with the milk, starting and ending with the sugar. Mix on low speed until combined, then increase to medium speed until the frosting is fluffy and smooth, approximately 2-3 minutes.
  • Add the vanilla extract and mix until fully blended.
  • If the frosting is too thick, add a little more milk, one tablespoon at a time, until you reach the desired consistency.
  • Use immediately to frost your favorite cake, cupcakes, or cookies, or store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week.

Notes

Make sure the butter is at room temperature for easy mixing.
You can adjust the consistency of the frosting by adding more milk for a thinner frosting or more powdered sugar for a thicker frosting.
For a richer chocolate flavor, consider adding a pinch of salt or a teaspoon of espresso powder.
