Equipment

  • 1 sharp knife
  • 1 pot with a lid
  • 1 strainer or slotted spoon
  • 1 bowl
  • 1 kitchen towel

Ingredients
  

  • 1 pound fresh chestnuts
  • 4 cups water
  • to taste dash salt Optional, to taste.

Instructions
 

  • Rinse the chestnuts under cold water to remove any dirt or debris.
  • Using a sharp knife, carefully make an 'X' incision on the flat side of each chestnut to help steam escape.
  • In a large pot, bring 4 cups of water to a boil. Optionally, add a pinch of salt to the water.
  • Once the water is boiling, add the chestnuts to the pot, reduce the heat to a simmer, and cover the pot with a lid.
  • Allow the chestnuts to boil for about 30 minutes, or until they are tender and easily pierced with a fork.
  • Carefully remove the chestnuts from the pot using a strainer or slotted spoon and let them cool for a few minutes.
  • While still warm, peel the chestnuts by removing the outer shell and the thin, papery skin underneath, using a kitchen towel to help grip them if needed.
  • Serve the boiled chestnuts warm or store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for later use.

Notes

Boiled chestnuts can be enjoyed on their own or used in recipes such as stuffing, soups, or desserts.
If you have leftover boiled chestnuts, you can freeze them for up to 3 months. Just make sure to thaw them before using in future recipes.
