Ingredients
  

  • 1 loaf bread 12-16 slices, preferably French or challah.
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter Melted, for greasing.
  • maple syrup For serving, optional.
  • powdered sugar For dusting, optional.

Instructions
 

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Grease the bottom and sides of a 9x13-inch baking dish with melted butter.
  • Cut the bread into thick slices (about 1 inch each) and arrange them in the baking dish, slightly overlapping as needed.
  • In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, and salt until well combined.
  • Pour the egg mixture evenly over the sliced bread, making sure all pieces are coated. Gently press down on the bread to soak up the liquid.
  • Cover the baking dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, or overnight for best results.
  • Remove the dish from the refrigerator and let it sit at room temperature for about 10 minutes before baking.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 40-45 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and puffed.
  • Serve warm with maple syrup and a dusting of powdered sugar, if desired.

You can customize this recipe by adding fruits like blueberries or sliced bananas before baking.
For an extra touch of indulgence, consider adding a cream cheese mixture between the layers of bread.
