Equipment

  • 1 9x13 inch baking dish
  • 1 mixing bowl
  • 1 whisk
  • 1 peeler
  • 1 cutting board
  • 1 skillet
  • 1 oven

Ingredients

  • 1 loaf challah or brioche bread, cut into 1-inch cubes 16 oz
  • 3 large eggs
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 4 medium apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1 cup caramel sauce store-bought or homemade
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon butter for greasing
  • to taste powdered sugar for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease the baking dish with butter.
  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, vanilla extract, and ground cinnamon until well combined.
  • Add the cubed bread to the egg mixture, stirring gently to ensure all the bread is coated. Let it sit for about 10 minutes to soak up the liquid.
  • In a skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter and add the sliced apples. Sauté for 5-7 minutes until they begin to soften. Stir in the brown sugar and cook for another 2 minutes, allowing the apples to caramelize slightly.
  • Spread half of the soaked bread mixture evenly in the greased baking dish, followed by half the caramel sauce and half of the sautéed apples.
  • Layer the remaining bread mixture over the top, followed by the rest of the apples. Drizzle the remaining caramel sauce over the entire dish.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes or until the bread is golden and the custard is set.
  • Let it cool for a few minutes before slicing into portions. Serve warm, garnished with powdered sugar if desired.

Notes

This dish can be prepared the night before and stored in the refrigerator. Simply cover it with plastic wrap after assembling and bake it in the morning. Adjust the cooking time as necessary if starting from cold. For a richer flavor, you can add chopped nuts or raisins to the apple mixture.
