- 16 ounces French bread, cut into 1-inch cubes
- 3 large eggs
- 2 cups milk
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 2 medium apples, peeled and diced (about 2 cups)
- 1 cup raisins
- 1/4 cup chopped walnuts optional
- 1 tablespoon butter for greasing the baking dish
- to taste powdered sugar for dusting, optional
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9x13 inch baking dish with butter.
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, brown sugar, vanilla extract, and ground cinnamon until well combined.
Add the bread cubes to the egg mixture and gently toss to coat. Allow to sit for about 10 minutes to let the bread absorb the liquid.
Fold in the diced apples, raisins, and walnuts (if using) until evenly distributed.
Pour the mixture into the greased baking dish, spreading it out evenly and pressing down slightly to ensure the bread is submerged in the custard.
Bake in the preheated oven for about 45 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.
Let it cool for a few minutes before slicing into servings. Dust with powdered sugar before serving, if desired.
This casserole can be prepared the night before. Simply cover it with plastic wrap and refrigerate. Bake it in the morning, adding 10-15 minutes to the cooking time.
Feel free to substitute the apples with other fruits like berries or peaches for a twist.
Serve with maple syrup or a dollop of whipped cream for an extra treat!
